'Denver' still recovering from eating toxic plant

Days after a giraffe died at the Reid Park Zoo from eating toxic oleander leaves, veterinarians are still monitoring another giraffe that also ate the poisonous plant.

"Denver" is still not out of the woods yet. She's walking and drinking but she's not eating, which concerns doctors.

Toxic oleander kills Watoto the giraffe

(KOLD) - Reid Park Zoo handlers are fairly certain the toxic leaves of an oleander bush lead to Watoto the giraffe's death Tuesday night.

The animal's feed was somehow tainted with the poisonous leaves at the zoo, spokeswoman Vivian VanPeenan said in a release.

VanPeenan described how it is common practice for zoos to incorporate clippings from surrounding vegetation into the giraffe's feed. She added that there are procedures in place to ensure the safety of those clippings.

When the state of Arizona builds a new highway project, it must sometimes move thousands of saguaro.

Some of them giants, 20 feet or more.

And more often than not, they die.

"We're looking to increase their survivability," says Tim Tait, a communications coordinator with the AZ Dept. of Transportation. "We're analyzing our policies."

That policy evaluation is being made following a year long study on how well transplanted saguaros have survived when moved.

It appears to the study that about 60% of them survive.
