(KOLD) - A huge pep rally for all Tucson Unified School District employees as the district looks to solve several challenges.

9,000 people crowded into the Tucson Convention Center arena to hear a message that was meant to be intense, highlighting the good and the bad as the district prepares for another school year.

UA medical students going paperless

University of Arizona Medical students are involved in a pilot project that will help the school save thousands of dollars, along with the environment.

Students hoped to eventually make text books and papers a thing of the past, and switch to a completely paper-less curriculum.

The pilot program launched on Saturday, as students got a tutorial on using IPads.

TUSD disputes state's $2 million fine

Tucson Unified School District is firing back at a nearly $2 million fine levied by the state.

"It's a complex system so there's lots of gray area," says TUSD superintendent John Pedicone.

The Arizona Department of Education says several TUSD schools are in non-compliance with state rules so it slapped the district with a $1.9 million fine.

TUSD Board holds meeting on desegregation order

The Tucson Unified School District Governing Board will hold an executive session at 3pm on Tuesday in the Morrow Education Center.

The board will discuss a recent court ruling, which requires the district to go back under a federal desegregation order. The issue dates back to the 1970's when minority students sued the district for discrimination.

Camp held at La Paloma to improve education for sustainability

Education and business leaders from around the world are coming to the Catalina Foothills to attend Camp Snowball.

Camp Snowball is a conference being held at La Paloma beginning Thursday and running through the weekend. The camp is a workshop as well as a discussion about new ideas for creating a change in our schools. Parents, students and community leaders are also welcome to attend Camp Snowball.

UA student housing moves forward

UA student housing moves forward

A new student dormitory project at the site of the old YMCA on North Fifth Avenue, is moving ahead toward a projected 2012 occupancy date.

The dorm, designed to house over 700 students, will have a swimming pool and dedicated parking.  It is one of three projects in the works to alleviate dormitory waiting lists for new students.

Tucson school to host teacher from Egypt

The following is a news release from American Councils for International Education:

Mohamed El-Dwiny from Egypt has been awarded a fellowship from the U.S. Department of State to participate in the 2011 Teachers of Critical Languages Program.

El-Dwiny is one of a total of 25 teachers who have been selected from China and Egypt for participation. He will teach Arabic for a full academic year at Safford Engineering/Technology Magnet School in Tucson.
