Sun Tran reminder to passengers, SunGO launch is Sunday | News
Sun Tran is making a final push to remind passengers to be ready for the launch of SunGO, the new fare payment system on transit vehicles on June 30.
“Our number one priority is to make sure passengers are prepared to board the bus once SunGO launches this Sunday,” said Kate Riley, General Manager of Sun Tran, in a recent news release. “We continue to reach out and help customers transition to the new system.”
The SunGO system will incorporate smart card technology to make fare payments and transfers throughout the region on Sun Tran, Sun Express, Sun Shuttle and eventually the Sun Link streetcar faster and more convenient, when it’s all done with just one card. The system also offers many new benefits for passengers like more convenient purchasing options, faster boarding, and balance protection for registered cards if lost or stolen.
“The key is to plan ahead,” advised Riley. “Riders should have their SunGO product ready now and avoid the last minute rush.”
All passengers, whether regular bus pass holders or those paying by the ride with cash, are encouraged to get a SunGO Card to help speed the boarding process. The smart card system’s “tap and go” technology quickly processes fare transactions and helps keep buses on schedule. Sun Tran’s current magnetic passes will not be accepted after June 29.
Bus riders using one of the city’s three transit centers can also speak with a member of Sun Tran’s bilingual “Ask Me” team, who are available to familiarize individuals with the system’s new features, offer hands-on assistance to customers using the ticket vending machines and help riders select the SunGO product that best fits their needs. The “Ask Me” team, identified easily by their bright orange shirts, will be at transit centers through mid-July.

Sun Tran is offering more locations for passengers to ready their transit fare payment product before June 30, including online, at ticket vending machines located at each transit center, Sun Tran’s Administrative Office. Sun Tran’s new online sales site offers the complete array of full fare and economy fare SunGO passes, allowing customers to purchase and manage their SunGO products any time of day or night.
Sales outlets throughout the region now offer economy passes in addition to the limited full fare passes previously available, and Sun Tran continues to add more sales locations. An up-to-date list of participating sales outlets is available online at www.suntran.com/sungo_wheretobuy.php.
To encourage full fare passengers to be ready to board with the new products starting June 30, Sun Tran is offering a free SunGO Card if a pass or cash value is loaded at the time of purchase through June 30 at all Fry’s Foods, ticket vending machines at the transit centers and other select sales outlets. After June 30, the SunGO Card will cost $2.
Economy fare passengers should already have their SunGO ID & Card as proof of qualification for the reduced fare. The SunGO ID & Card is available for seniors 65 years and older, Medicare Cardholders, and disabled and low-income individuals. The SunGO ID & Card will serve as an all-in-one fare payment and the only accepted ID card effective June 30.

In addition to saving money and reducing stress by riding the bus, full fare customers should register their card to realize the many benefits of SunGO including:
**Balance Protection - Replaces the cash value or days remaining on a pass if a card is lost or stolen
**Auto Buy - Automatically adds value through a secure funds transfer from a credit or debit card on a regular basis
**One-Ride Safety Net – Allows a one-way trip if a pass or cash value is not loaded on the card
SunGO ID & Card holders will automatically receive these benefits.
“SunGO improves regional mobility by creating a more efficient and convenient transit system,” reported Jeremy Papuga, RTA Director of Transit Services. “Customers will quickly realize the advantages of using SunGO when they ride public transit.”
The SunGO fare payment system was made possible through funding provided by the RTA. Sun Tran contracted with SPX Genfare, the vendor responsible for the development of the SunGO fare payment and online system.
