Best Hospital ranking for geriatric care for UMC | Health

The University of Arizona Medical Center – University Campus has been ranked as one of the best hospitals in the U.S. for senior care, according to U.S. News & World Report.  The magazine published their ‘Best Hospitals’ list for 2012-2013 today.

UMC ranked 33 out of over 5,000 hospitals across the nation for geriatric care.  Only hospitals ranked in the top 50 in any of the specialty categories (a list follows) received the ‘Best Hospital’ rating.

“The interprofessional team led by Dr. Mindy Fain is truly an exemplary program that looks at the total care of the older adult,” said Andreas Theordorou, MD, chief medical officer of the University of Arizona Medical Center.  Dr. Fain is the division chief for geriatrics, general internal medicine and palliative medicine and is also the co-director of the Arizona Center on Aging.

 “We are excited to receive this national recognition of our expertise,” said Thomas Boyer, MD, chair of the Department of Medicine in the UA College of Medicine. “The growing numbers of seniors in our community benefit from the excellent geriatric care we provide, and we look forward to expanding our capabilities further with an Acute Care of Elders (ACE) Unit and Senior Emergency Room Programs in the coming year.”

UMC also ranked among the ‘highest performing’ hospitals in 11 other specialty categories:

These hospital ratings have been published by U.S. News for over 22 years, with the University of Arizona Medical Center receiving a ‘Best Hospital’ rating for the last ten years.
