Doolen opens soccer fields, walking path this weekend | Events
The public is invited to the opening of Doolen Middle School’s new soccer fields and walking path.
A project sponsored by Tucson Unified School District, the City of Tucson and the Ft. Lowell Soccer Club. The ceremony will be September 28 from 9 a.m. to noon, with the dedication at 9:30 a.m. at Doolen Middle School (2400 N. Country Club Road).
This project was part of a joint-use facility between TUSD, City of Tucson Parks and Recreation and the Fort Lowell Soccer Club that consists of two new soccer fields and a lighted walking path. These improvements are a great benefit to Doolen, the neighborhood, and soccer communities. Other improvements to the fields included landscaping, ADA access, and a drinking fountain, as well as a shot put/discus throw and long jump.
Scheduled to speak at the ceremony are:
TUSD Superintendent H.T. Sanchez, Doolen Principal Renee Morales, Ward III Council Aide David Higuera, Director of Tucson Parks and Recreation Fred Gray, and Fort Lowell Soccer Club President Gordon McKenzie
Following the dedication ceremony there will be a walk/run around the new path and field day activities in which children may participate. Food will be available for purchase.
The project was funded by TUSD through $1.1 million in bond dollars, approved by voters in the 2004 bond election to bring improvements to district schools. Through separate agreements, the Fort Lowell Soccer Club, with support from the soccer community, will provide $280,000 to fund the lighting for the fields at a future date.
